About the Idaho Chess Association:

Our Mission & Vision

Our Core Belief The Idaho Chess Association (ICA) is dedicated to fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and growing chess community across the entire state. We believe that chess is more than just a game; it is a cornerstone of intellectual development, a bridge between generations, and a unifying force for Idahoans of all backgrounds. As we rebuild our organization, our primary goal is to restore trust, re-establish our non-profit status, and create a sustainable future for chess in Idaho.

Clubs: The Heart of Our Community Chess clubs are the heartbeat of our state's chess scene. They are where friendships are forged, skills are honed, and the love for the game is passed down. The ICA is deeply committed to supporting these local hubs:

  • Support & Resources: We provide guidance for starting new clubs and sustaining existing ones.
  • Connection: We facilitate networking between clubs to share best practices, organize inter-club matches, and build a unified state-wide network.
  • Growth: We aim to increase the number of active clubs across all four regions, ensuring that every Idahoan has access to a local playing environment.

Tournaments: Building a Legacy of Excellence The ICA is committed to providing a robust competitive pathway for players of all ages and skill levels. We are actively working to elevate the prestige of our state championships, making them premier events that attract talent from across the region.

State Closed Championships (Idaho Residents Only) These events are reserved for Idaho residents to crown our state champions:

  • Scholastic State Championship: Nurturing the next generation of champions.
  • Girls State Championship: Celebrating and empowering female talent.
  • Buckendorf Senior State Championship: Honoring the wisdom and experience of our senior players.
  • Idaho State Championship: A prestigious invitation-style event designed to showcase the highest level of competitive play among Idaho residents.
  • Idaho Blitz Championship: A fast-paced, high-energy event that tests speed and tactical sharpness, building excitement and engagement.

Open Championships (All Players Welcome)

  • Idaho Open: Our premier open event, featuring significant prize funds (over $1,000) to reward top-tier play. Open to players from any state.
  • Regional Open Tournaments: Additional open events held throughout the year across Idaho's four regions, welcoming players from near and far.

Our Goal: We intend to build the prestige of these tournaments through professional organization, increased prize pools, and wider recognition, making them must-attend events for serious competitors.

Regional Representation: Serving Every Corner of Idaho Idaho is vast, and our commitment is to ensure no player feels left behind. We are actively working to establish dedicated Tournament Directors in all four regions (West, South, East, and North) to ensure:

  • Equitable access to tournaments and resources.
  • Localized support for players and organizers.
  • A responsive leadership structure that understands the unique needs of each region.

Partnerships & Future Growth We cannot achieve our vision alone. The ICA seeks to build strong alliances with schools, libraries, local businesses, and national organizations like US Chess. Our roadmap for the future includes:

  • Restoring 501(c)(3) Status: To unlock grant funding and tax-deductible donation opportunities.
  • Expanding Access: Launching a statewide chess camp program and increasing regional qualifiers.
  • Membership Growth: Doubling our membership base to fuel our programs and events.
