About ICN: "Preserving Our History, Building Our Future"
Idaho Chess Network (ICN) Operating as Idaho Chess Federation (DBA)
Status: IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Legacy: Continuing the 79-year tradition of chess in Idaho.
Section 1: Honoring 79 Years of Legacy
The Idaho Chess Association (ICA) served our community with dedication for nearly eight decades. We stand on the shoulders of giants. From the early days of regional clubs to establishing state championships, the ICA laid the foundation for the vibrant chess scene we enjoy today. It is our firm intention to honor that history. We are committed to:
- Preserving Records: Maintaining archives of past tournaments, titled winners, and historical milestones.
- Celebrating Champions: Ensuring the achievements of past generations remain accessible to current players.
- Respecting Tradition: Carrying forward the spirit of camaraderie and competition that defined the ICA era.
While we have formed a new legal entity to ensure financial stability and operational clarity, we view ourselves not as a replacement, but as the next chapter in Idaho chess's long and storied book. As U.S. Chess finalizes our affiliation transition, we anticipate that the official history of the ICA will be seamlessly integrated into the history of the Idaho Chess Federation.
Section 2: A New Chapter: Why We Formed ICN
In 2024, faced with the loss of the ICA's tax-exempt status, the ICA Board made a proactive decision to form the Idaho Chess Network (ICN).This was not a move away from tradition, but a necessary step to secure the future. By creating a fresh, transparent organization, we ensured that:
- Tournaments could continue without interruption.
- Financial accountability was restored immediately.
- A new generation of volunteers—parents, coaches, and players—could step up to lead.
Our Board was elected unanimously by those who wanted to ensure every child in Idaho has access to the same opportunities the ICA provided for so many years.
Section 3: Leadership & Community
We are not distant administrators; we are the parents and neighbors of the Idaho chess community. When leadership gaps emerged, families stepped forward to protect the sport they love. Our mission is simple: Run clean, safe, and exciting tournaments while honoring the past.
- Transparency: Clear financial oversight and open communication.
- Continuity: No disruption to ratings or player membership.
- Growth: Expanding access to chess for all ages and skill levels.
Section 4: Legal Status & Affiliation
Tax-Exempt Status: ICN has been granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS. Donations are now tax-deductible, securing funding for scholarships, camps, and events.U.S. Chess Affiliation: We have formally applied to succeed the ICA as the official state affiliate. The matter is scheduled for the USCF Board consideration and hopeful ratification at the U.S. Chess Annual Meeting in August 2026.Current Operations:
- All ICN-hosted tournaments are currently US Chess rated.
- Player records remain intact and active.
- The transition is proceeding smoothly with full cooperation from national bodies.
