🏁 Building the Idaho Chess Scene

From the First Move to the Grand Finale.

The Idaho Chess Federation is just getting started. We are laying the groundwork for a vibrant, active chess community across the state. Our goal isn't just to hold tournaments—it's to build a sustainable ecosystem where players of all levels can grow, compete, and connect.

We are currently in Phase 1: Foundation. This means securing great venues, training new Tournament Directors, and launching our core events. As we grow, so will our calendar.

🏆 What's Happening Now (Phase 1)

Our immediate focus is on delivering high-quality, well-organized standard events.

The Idaho Open (Standard Swiss)

Our flagship event is back. We are focusing on a clean, fair, and professional experience.

  • Format: Standard Swiss System (Time Control: [e.g., G/90 + 30]).
  • Goal: To provide a reliable rated event for serious players.
  • Location"  Riverside Hotel, Garden City
  • Want to help? We are looking for experienced Tournament Directors to co-host.

Scholastic & Youth Focus

We believe the future of chess in Idaho starts with our youth.

  • Plan: Monthly or quarterly quick events for K-12 players.
  • Goal: Low-pressure environments to learn the ropes and gain ratings.

🚀 The Roadmap: What's Coming Next

As we secure more venues and train more TDs, we plan to expand into these exciting formats. These are our targets for the rest of 2026 and into 2027.

🔄 Round Robin & Quads

Target: Late 2026 Once we have a steady core of players, we'll introduce smaller, intimate formats.

  • Quads: Perfect for beginners to get 3 guaranteed games.
  • Round Robins: For our top-rated players who want a true test of endurance.

🐛 Bughouse & Team Events

Target: 2027 We want to bring the energy of team chess to Idaho!

  • The Plan: A "Bughouse Bash" where families and friends can team up.
  • Why wait? We need to find larger venues with enough tables to accommodate the chaos and excitement of team play.

Blitz & Bullet Marathons

Target: Summer 2027 Fast-paced, fun, and social. We plan to host these as "after-hours" events or weekend on chess.com once our standard schedule is solid.

🤝We need your help to make this happen

A chess federation is only as strong as its volunteers. We can't do this alone!

🎓 Become a Club-Level Tournament Director (TD)

You don't need to be a chess master to run a tournament. In fact, some of the best TDs are parents, teachers, or community members who are organized, fair, and eager to help.

  • Is it hard? Not at all! The USCF offers a free, online Club TD certification that takes less than an hour to complete. It covers the basics of pairing, scoring, and rules.
  • Who is a good fit?
    • Parents who want to support their child's chess journey.
    • Teachers or librarians looking for a community role.
    • Anyone who enjoys organization and fairness.
    • You do not need to be a regular tournament player.
  • What will you do?
    • Manage pairings (we provide software/tools to help!).
    • Ensure the clock runs smoothly.
    • Create a welcoming atmosphere for players.
  • Ready to try? We will guide you through the certification process and provide mentorship for your first event.
    • Contact us: [Insert Email] with the subject line "Future TD" to get started.

🏢Do you have a venue?

We are looking for community centers, libraries, schools, or cafes that can host chess events.

  • Requirements: Tables, chairs, good lighting, and a quiet space.
  • Partner With Us: Let's discuss how we can bring chess to your space.

👋Just a player?

The best way to support us is to show up.

  • Register for our upcoming events.
  • Tell your friends.
  • Give us feedback on what you want to see.
